Everyday with my Rucksack
Above is my Everyday Rucksack - it has been my constant everyday carry for the last 4 years i’m sure (well almost). I remember heading to the leather shop and immediately falling in love with a caramel hide, so I impulsively picked it up with the intention of treating myself to a KayK Goods creation. I used to be very stingy in that way, mainly gifting pieces to my nearest and dearest but seldom myself. I am definitely pleased with my decision on that impulsive day, as I often find myself admiring the character my bag has built over the years.
From shopping for groceries to roaming in Paris, she has been faithful; I call her she (although she hasn’t a name), because my Everyday Rucksack feels like much more than just a bag to me. I was proud making her in this new colour, and I am still proud as she stands strong on my bedroom floor. Even though it feels silly personifying an inanimate object, I truly feel like little parts of us are dispelled into the things we love; it’s like the childhood teddy bear you were able to have full blown conversations with. We form a dialogue with the character that time, a journey and our imagination has created, because to some extent our ‘things’ are more than just objects, they are capsules that reflect parts of us - who we are and the world we see. With that being said, I look forward to seeing what becomes of us over the next 4 years!
The story of the Everyday Rucksack started some years before that day in the leather shop. In the beginning she even had a name - ‘The Charlotte Bag’ - she was named after a friend who had requested for me to make a rucksack that would fit a brand spanking new MacBook Pro and was to be loosely based off the classic satchel design - to the left is what she looked like originally. Being my first commission, The Everyday Rucksack is definitely one of my most treasured designs, the tales just happen to make it that much greater :)
